Setting the organizational purpose means working out which issues and stakeholders the organization is there to serve and which harmful effects it must avoid. This draws on existing documents such as the constituting documents; the organization's core identity as it was, is and aspires to be, including its values and the ethical conduct expected; significant issues, including global threats that change over time such as climate change; what member, reference and other relevant stakeholders expect; and the organization's capabilities and opportunities. The governing body should make sure the heart of the purpose is captured in a short statement that aids communication and helps judge actions and success across the organization; that every stakeholder can access the purpose and, where possible, that it appears in the constituting documents; that it sits at the centre of governance practice, debate and decisions; and that it stays alive to changes in the context.
