Guidance to find nonconformities, act to control, contain and correct them, handle what they caused and judge whether action is needed to remove their causes. Effective procedures make sure that failures to meet a requirement, poor planning approaches and weaknesses in the BCMS are found, followed by prompt action to stop them recurring and to find and remove root causes, so that actual and potential causes are continually detected, analysed and removed. Nonconformities, and the corrective actions for them, are dealt with promptly, and a clear, well-worded statement of the nonconformity can ground the corrective action; once the root cause is found, it is investigated and a corrective action plan drawn up for immediate resolution that limits the consequences, sets out the changes needed to put things right, restores normal operation and removes causes so the problem does not come back, the kind and timing of action matching the size and nature of the nonconformity and what it could lead to. The BCMS is improved even with no nonconformity in view, through correction, corrective action, innovation and reorganization; procedures for dealing with actual and potential nonconformities and for continuing corrective action help keep the BCMS dependable and effective and set out responsibilities, authorities and the stages of planning and carrying out corrective action; and top management makes sure corrective actions are carried out and methodically followed up to check they worked.
