Auditor competence can be built through a mix of: successfully finishing training courses on the knowledge and skills every auditor needs; experience in a relevant technical, professional or managerial role that calls for judgement, decision-making and problem solving, and for communicating with peers, professionals, managers, customers and other interested parties; education or training, and experience, in a particular discipline and sector; and audit experience gained under the supervision of an auditor who is competent in that discipline. Completing a course successfully means passing its examination where there is one, and otherwise taking part in the course and finishing it.
