ISO 15489-1:2016 4: 4 Principles for managing records

Records management follows five principles. Creating, capturing and managing records is part of doing business in every context. Records are authoritative evidence only if they carry authenticity, reliability, integrity and useability. A record is content plus metadata describing its context, structure and management over time. Decisions on what to create, capture and manage rest on analysis and risk assessment of business activity within its business, legal, regulatory and societal setting. Systems of any degree of automation apply records controls and processes, and depend on defined policy, responsibilities, monitoring and evaluation, and training to meet the identified records requirements.
