ISO 14004:2016 5.2: Environmental policy

Guidance: the environmental policy defines the organization's strategic direction on the environment within the scope of the system, gives the framework for environmental objectives and fixes the degree of responsibility and performance against which actions are judged. It should be particular to the organization and fit its purpose and context, including the nature and scale of its impacts, and include commitments to fulfil compliance obligations, protect the environment, prevent pollution and continually improve. In developing it the organization should consider its vision, mission and values, guiding principles, interested party needs and communication, relevant internal and external issues including local conditions, coordination with other policies, and the effects of external environmental conditions and events. Protection commitments can cover resource efficiency, biodiversity, climate change mitigation and air and water quality; prevention of pollution can follow a hierarchy from source reduction through reuse and recycling to treatment and controlled disposal. Top management establishes and implements the policy; it should be maintained as documented information, be consistent with or linked to other policies, be made known to every person the organization's control extends to, and be available to interested parties.
