Chapter 6: the Responsible AI Canvas – Ireland Guidelines for the Responsible Use of AI in the Public Service (2025)

Ireland Guidelines for the Responsible Use of AI in the Public Service (2025) 6: Complete the Responsible AI Canvas with a cross-functional team at the planning stage

What does 6 require?

After deciding to proceed, a cross-functional team drawn from service delivery, technology, product ownership, legal and external partners completes the Responsible AI Canvas as a collaborative planning exercise aligned with the Design Principles for Government in Ireland. The team works through every section (problem statement, why AI, stakeholders, risk assessment and mitigation, each of the seven principles, legal compliance including EU AI Act risk categorisation and who acts as provider and deployer, communication), adds questions where the use case needs them, plans ongoing risk assessment across the lifecycle, considers the communication strategy from the outset, and sets governance for the full lifecycle. Using the canvas does not of itself guarantee responsible or compliant AI; accountable stakeholders remain responsible for the end-to-end solution.
