IFRS 17 Premium Allocation Approach

IFRS 17 - Insurance Contracts IFRS17-PAA-PremiumAllocationApproach-Eligibility-Simplified-1Year: IFRS 17 - Premium Allocation Approach (PAA) + Eligibility + Simplified Approach + 1-Year Coverage + Liability for Remaining Coverage (Paragraphs 53-59)

Paragraphs 53-59 establish the Premium Allocation Approach (PAA) - simplified measurement model. Per public IFRS 17 abstract + IFRS Foundation Project Summary + Wikipedia + Big 4 Insurance Industry Insights (full IFRS 17 text NOT reproduced): PAA is a simplified measurement model permitted as alternative to GMM for groups of insurance contracts where: (a) coverage period of each contract in the group is one year or less + presumed eligible; (b) coverage period exceeds one year AND entity reasonably expects measurement under PAA would not differ materially from GMM throughout coverage period; eligibility tested at initial recognition + not reassessed. Liability for Remaining Coverage (LRC) under PAA (Para 55-56): on initial recognition equals premiums received less directly attributable acquisition cash flows (or amortised over coverage period if not paid as incurred); decreased by insurance revenue recognised in period for services provided; increased for premiums received in period; adjusted for changes if contract has significant financing component (when accounting for time value of money required - more than 12 months gap between premium and service). Onerous contracts under PAA: if facts and circumstances indicate group may be onerous at initial recognition + assess and recognise loss component; entity may use simplified approach to determine if onerous (assess fulfilment cash flows + check against carrying amount of LRC); same loss component tracking as GMM. Liability for Incurred Claims (LIC) under PAA: measured per GMM with current estimates of fulfilment cash flows + risk adjustment; discounting if cash flows expected more than one year from incurred claim (option). Coordinates with IFRS 17 Para 53-59 + IASB TRG + Big 4 PAA eligibility guidance + sectoral application for short-duration insurance (motor + property + travel + health + group life + term life renewable annually). IFRS 17 PAA applies.
