IEC 61508:2010 - Functional Safety of E/E/PE Safety-related Systems
Part 1, Clause 5: Documentation – IEC 61508:2010 - Functional Safety of E/E/PE Safety-related Systems

IEC 61508:2010 - Functional Safety of E/E/PE Safety-related Systems 1-5.2: Part 1, 5.2 Documentation requirements

Documentation must carry enough information for every finished lifecycle phase (overall, E/E/PE or software) to let later phases and verification proceed, and enough to support functional safety management and assessment, including the results of any assessment. What is recorded follows the clauses of the standard (or the relevant sector standard) unless justified, and each party holds what its duties need. Documents must be accurate and concise, understandable to their users, fit for purpose, accessible and maintainable; carry titles showing their scope and an index for ready access; carry version numbers; be structured so information can be searched and the latest revision identified; and go through revision, amendment, review and approval within a document control scheme. The structure may follow company procedures and sector practice.
