The 8.4.2 limits do not cover currents deliberately passed through the patient for a physiological purpose. Currents flowing to, from or between patient connections stay within the patient leakage and patient auxiliary current limits of Tables 3 and 4 measured under 8.7.4; leakage from, to or between other accessible parts stays within the touch current limits; those touch limits do not apply to connector contacts, fuseholder contacts during fuse replacement, lampholder contacts after lamp removal and parts behind tool-free access covers (or covers the operator is instructed to open) where a connection to a patient is negligibly probable and the instructions say not to touch the part and the patient at once, provided their voltage stays at or below 60 V for d.c. (ripple up to 10 percent) or 42.4 V peak for a.c. in normal or single fault condition and energy does not exceed 240 VA for more than 60 s or 20 J stored at 2 V or more; the same voltage and energy limits apply to internal parts touchable by the test pin through enclosure openings at up to 1 N and by the 4 mm by 100 mm test rod through top openings or pre-set control openings at 10 N, and with any specified tool. Where a tool-free access cover exposes parts above the limits that are automatically de-energised on opening, the de-energising device meets the mains isolating switch requirements of 8.11.1, keeps working in single fault condition, and a tool is needed to defeat it. One second after a plug is withdrawn, neither the voltage across its pins nor that from a pin to the enclosure exceeds 60 V, nor does stored charge exceed 45 microcoulombs, tested at rated voltage with switches on and off at the worst point of the waveform; and capacitive circuit parts accessible after de-energising and removing normal-use access covers have no more than 60 V residual or 45 microcoulombs, or, where automatic discharge is not reasonably possible and covers need a tool, a manual discharge device marked with the high-voltage symbol and specified in the technical description.
