ICMM Mining Principles (2024 Update) 6.3: Tailings facility management

What does 6.3 require?

Design, build, run, monitor and decommission tailings facilities with comprehensive risk-based management and governance that follows good practice recognised internationally, so that catastrophic failure is as unlikely as possible. All members committed on 5 August 2020 to implementing GISTM, the global tailings management standard (conformance due by 5 August 2023 for facilities whose potential consequences are rated extreme or very high, by 5 August 2025 for all others not in safe closure); riverine, lake or shallow marine disposal is only considered where an objective impact assessment shows it to be the soundest option.
