Fire alarms installed in parts of a building that must be accessible have to signal both audibly and visibly. In the Table 2 building categories the visual signal forms part of the fire alarm system: a red flashing beacon carrying the words Fire Alarm in English and Chinese on a plate nearby or engraved on its cover, mounted prominently where it is readily noticed when it operates. Exit staircases and their smoke lobbies are excluded, as are the back-of-house, staff-only and non-public areas the Division lists for domestic, office, department store and shopping complex, hotel, place of worship, cinema and other uses. The Best Practice Section recommends visual alarms in all occupied areas and accessible guest rooms.
