Laissez-faire means leadership that is avoided or simply absent, by definition the most inactive and, on almost all research, the most ineffective and dissatisfying style: in the extreme the person does not care what happens, avoids responsibility, cannot decide, waits for others to take the initiative the task requires, is absent when needed, and nothing is transacted. Everyone shows it sometimes; being seen over time as primarily avoidant is what makes leadership ineffective. A deliberate decision to wait and learn before acting can be misread as laissez-faire, so the frequency and the reasons matter.
