FFIEC IT Examination Handbook WPS-06: Customer Daylight Overdrafts (Wholesale Payment Systems)

An institution that lets customers make payments without available balances is extending credit, so it monitors each customer's credit position, controls the intraday credit extended, keeps guidelines that review customer credit limits and internal credit reviews, require management approval of overdrafts within the approving officers' lending authority, report and approve payments exceeding limits, review incurred overdrafts for compliance, and review collateralisation arrangements, recognises that expected incoming payments may not arrive or be final, and provides in its credit policies for approving and monitoring intraday credit lines and for limits on overnight overdrafts with analysis like that of the loan portfolio.
