A VSQG or SQG keeps its category for an episodic event if: it has only one event per calendar year unless a petition is granted under 262.233; it notifies EPA on Form 8700-12 at least 30 calendar days before a planned event, or within 72 hours of an unplanned event by phone, email or fax followed by the form, giving the start and end dates, reasons, types and estimated quantities of waste and a facility contact and emergency coordinator with 24-hour telephone access; it has or obtains an EPA identification number; it does not accumulate episodic waste on drip pads or in containment buildings; containers are marked "Episodic Hazardous Waste" with an indication of the hazards and the event start date, and tanks are marked the same way with inventory logs identifying the start date; a VSQG manages the waste to minimise fire, explosion or release, with sound, compatible, closed containers and tanks with overflow controls and daily inspections, while an SQG meets 262.16(b)(2) and (b)(3); the waste is shipped on a manifest to a designated facility (or, for an SQG, treated on site) within 60 calendar days of the event start, a VSQG following Subpart B and 262.44 and filing exception reports as an SQG; and records are kept for three years from the event end: start and end dates, description of the event, types and quantities of waste, how it was managed and the receiving facility, the transporters, and any EPA approval letter for an additional event.
