To avoid breaching privacy, the employer fixes the conditions for consulting the mailbox of an absent employee in advance, for example in the IT charter, and staff are informed of them. Messages sent from or received on the workstation are presumed professional and may be read; messages clearly identified as personal must not be opened; the secrecy of private correspondence can be lifted only in a criminal investigation or by a court decision.
