Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines - Exhibited Animals RATITE-S1.1-4.1: Ratite S1.1-4.1 Dangerous ratites, walk-through exclusion areas, fence heights, wallows, shade for cassowaries, floor areas and drinking water

General dangerous-animal standards apply to adult cassowaries and adult male ostriches unless a proficient keeper assesses them as non-dangerous. Walk-through enclosures give a visitor exclusion area of at least a quarter of the minimum floor area. Fences are at least 1800 mm for ostriches and cassowaries, 1500 mm for emus and 1200 mm for rheas unless the authority approves otherwise. Enclosures include a species-appropriate wallow and a drinking water source besides it; cassowaries have shade; and minimum floor areas are 400 m2 for up to two ostriches plus 150 m2 per extra adult, and 200 m2 for a single emu, cassowary or rhea plus 100 m2 per extra adult.
