Every trustee of a regulated superannuation fund makes sure the fund is maintained solely for one or more core purposes, being the provision of member benefits on or after retirement from gainful work, on or after reaching a prescribed age, on or after the earlier of the two, or on or after death before retirement or that age (to the member's legal representative or dependants), or for one or more core purposes together with ancillary purposes such as benefits on termination of employment, cessation of work due to ill-health, or death after retirement or that age (s 62(1)). The trustee tests every fund decision, in particular early release and benefit payment decisions, against this sole purpose.
