Standard 7: Blood Management – Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition

Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition 7.04-7.08: Clinicians optimise patients' own blood, identify and manage bleeding risk and determine clinical need; blood management decisions, transfusion history and details are documented; prescribing and administration follow national guidelines and criteria; transfusion-related adverse events are reported per national guidelines; and the organisation participates in haemovigilance

What does 7.04-7.08 require?

Clinicians must use the blood management processes to limit the need for transfusion and avoid inappropriate use: building up patients' own red cells, haemoglobin and iron, finding and managing bleeding risk, and judging whether blood is clinically needed and with what risks. Transfusion decisions, history and details must be written in the record. Prescribing and administration must be supported to follow national guidelines and criteria, transfusion reactions must be reported as national guidance requires, and the organisation must take part in national haemovigilance.
