Standard 5: Workforce performance and effectiveness – Australia National Pathology Standards (First Edition 2027)

Australia National Pathology Standards (First Edition 2027) 5.01: Pathology workforce roles and responsibilities: confirm qualifications, knowledge, experience, skills and recency of practice, define functions and responsibilities and support their fulfilment, implement mandatory professional practice training and competency assessment for the non-medical workforce, support quality assurance participation and continuing professional development, monitor that staff work within defined roles and scope, and review roles periodically and when devices or services change

What does 5.01 require?

Competence is managed end to end. The practice verifies that each person holds the qualifications, knowledge, experience, skills and recent practice their role needs; writes down what the role does and backs the person to do it; runs mandatory professional practice training and a competency assessment scheme for non-medical staff; backs participation in quality assurance and continuing professional development; checks that people stay inside their defined role and scope; and re-examines roles on a cycle and whenever a device or service is introduced or materially changed.
