A Class 1a building must have: a continuous, step-free path to a dwelling entrance door from the pedestrian entry at the allotment boundary, an appurtenant Class 10a garage or carport, or a car space for the occupants' exclusive use; at least one level, step-free entrance door reached from that path; internal doors and corridors on the ground or entry level that allow unimpeded movement between spaces; a sanitary compartment on the ground or entry level that allows independent access and use; a shower that allows independent access and use; and walls around that toilet, the shower and any bath (other than a freestanding bath) built so grabrails can be installed later with minimal removal of wall linings. The path requirement need not be met where step-free access cannot be provided from the garage, carport or exclusive car space and site conditions leave no other suitable location. Deemed-to-Satisfy route: H8D2, compliance with the ABCB Standard for Livable Housing Design; its clause 1.1 (step-free access path) may be omitted where access via the garage, carport or parking space is not provided and the ground slope exceeds 1:14, the ramping needed would exceed the length and gradient clause 1.1(4) allows, there is insufficient space on the site, or the level difference to the entrance floor (measured as H8D2(3) sets out) needs ramping beyond those limits; all other provisions of the Standard still apply.
