A barrier is required wherever a fall of 1 m or more is possible off a floor or roof, through an external wall opening (openable windows aside) or at a sudden change of level in or around the building; wherever a bedroom's openable window is 2 m or more above the surface below; and wherever any other openable window is 4 m or more above it. A required barrier must be continuous for the full extent of the hazard, high enough to protect people from accidentally falling, built so people cannot fall through it, capable of restricting the passage of children, and strong and rigid enough to withstand foreseeable impact by people and, where appropriate, the static pressure of people pressing against it. Verification Method H5V1 proves wire barriers by pulling a 125 mm diameter cylinder with a cone through the wires under a 150 N force, repeated to set and record the required wire tension, and records deflection under a 2 kg mass for prototypes. Deemed-to-Satisfy route: H5D3, barriers and handrails to Housing Provisions Part 11.3 (barrier heights, opening limits, restrictions on climbable elements and window opening restrictions for bedroom windows).
