Personnel hold the Table 1 competencies for their role (handling, livestock management, stunning and sticking, welfare monitoring): knowledge of workplace requirements for livestock flow, the effects of stress and injury on animals and on product, handling hazards, feed and water needs, the relevant work instructions and emergency response; and skills in spotting weak, ill, injured or out-of-specification animals and signs of stress, following handling procedures, and operating and maintaining restraint, stunning, sticking and emergency equipment. The items draw on the national meat processing and agriculture training package units.
