Aged Care Infection Prevention and Control Guide (2024) w-devices: Use invasive devices only when necessary and manage them throughout their life

Invasive devices such as urinary catheters, PEG tubes, vascular lines and stomas are used only when absolutely necessary and for the shortest time. Insertion, maintenance and a plan for removal are documented, ongoing need is reviewed daily, workers are trained and competent, older people are informed and monitoring checks compliance with indications and infection rates. For indwelling urinary catheters the indication is documented before insertion.
