Derecognition takes a recognised asset or liability, in whole or in part, back out of the statement of financial position, normally because it no longer meets the definition: for an asset once control over all or some of it is lost, for a liability once the present obligation for all or some of it has gone. The accounting should faithfully depict two things: what the entity still holds afterwards (any retained component included) and how the transaction altered its position. Where an entity transfers an asset yet keeps significant exposure to swings in its benefits, or the transfer is not at arm's length, continued recognition of the transferred component, separate presentation or explanatory disclosure may be needed to achieve that representation.
