A unit to which goodwill relates but has not been allocated is tested whenever a sign of impairment exists by comparing its carrying amount without goodwill to its recoverable amount, and annually as well if it contains an indefinite-life or not-yet-available intangible that can only be tested within it. A unit carrying allocated goodwill is tested every year, and whenever a sign of impairment exists, by comparing its carrying amount including the goodwill with its recoverable amount: if recoverable amount is higher, neither the unit nor the goodwill is impaired; if lower, a loss is recognised under paragraph 104. The annual test may be done at any point in the year provided the timing is consistent, different units may be tested at different times, and a unit whose goodwill was acquired during the year is tested before that year ends. Where assets within the unit, or units within a group holding the goodwill, are tested at the same time, they are tested before the unit or group containing the goodwill, and any sign of impairment of an asset or lower unit is dealt with first. The previous period's detailed calculation may be reused only if the unit's assets and liabilities have not changed significantly, the earlier recoverable amount sat comfortably above carrying amount, and events since make a shortfall remote.
