When a foreign operation's results and position are translated for consolidation or equity accounting, normal procedures such as eliminating intragroup balances apply, but an intragroup monetary asset or liability cannot be eliminated against its counterpart without showing the currency effect, because it commits the group to converting currencies; the resulting difference goes to profit or loss, or to OCI where paragraph 32 applies. Where the foreign operation reports at a different date, translation uses the rate at its own reporting date, with adjustments for significant rate changes up to the group's date as AASB 10 or AASB 128 allows. Goodwill and fair value uplifts recognised when a foreign operation is acquired belong to that operation as its own assets and liabilities, expressed in its functional currency and translated at the closing rate.
