Reporting foreign currency transactions in the functional currency (paragraphs 20 to 37) – AASB 121 The Effects of Changes in Foreign Exchange Rates

AASB 121 The Effects of Changes in Foreign Exchange Rates 20-22: Initial recognition of foreign currency transactions: record each in the functional currency at the spot rate on the date it first qualifies for recognition, using an average rate only where rates do not fluctuate significantly

What does 20-22 require?

Transactions denominated in, or settled in, a foreign currency (buying or selling goods and services, borrowing or lending, and acquiring or disposing of assets or incurring or settling liabilities in that currency) are first recognised in the functional currency by applying the spot rate between the two currencies at the transaction date, which is the date the transaction first meets recognition criteria under Australian Accounting Standards. A rate approximating the actual one, such as a weekly or monthly average per currency, may be used for convenience, but not where rates move significantly.
